Why You Should Fear Swine Flu

The last deadly flu epidemic broke out almost 90 years ago in 1918. How quickly did the flu spread? From PBS.org comes this map that shows how the virus spread across the United States in just two weeks.

At the time, the United States had an excellent rail system that assisted the spread across the country. Transcontinental travel was limited to boats, and it took weeks to cross the Atlantic. But these are ancient forms of transportation when compared to the speed and efficiency of interstate highways and air travel that we enjoy today. And the capacity is significantly greater as well. In an age when you can fly from London to Lagos or New York to New Dehli within a day, the swine flu will spread like nothing seen before in human history if it connects from human to human.

In retrospect, it appears that the Avian flu was controlled because it never passed from human to human. We can hope the same stays true for swine flu, but from the epicenter in Mexico City we’re already seeing cases emerge in Texas, California, Kansas, and possibly New York. As with SARS and the avian flu scare of 4 years ago, the WHO and world governments are acting as quickly as possible to prevent its spread. But as the map above shows, if the flu does begin to expand across the map like wildfire, there may be nothing that anyone can do to stop it.

Calls to jail doctor who cloned dead girl Cady's blood

The fertility doctor who claims to have created cloned human embryos and injected them into women desperate to have children is facing a barrage of criticism.

Panayiotis Zavos says he placed 11 embryos, made from adult skin cells, into the wombs of four patients who paid up to £50,000.

The women - including one Briton - did not become pregnant.

Cady: Blood from the dead girl was used to create cloned embryos

But Dr Zavos, who made similar claims five years ago, is confident that the world's first cloned baby could be born in as little as a year.

In a TV documentary shown last night, he also told how he created clone embryos of three dead people, including a girl of ten, to help hone his technique.

The revelations were greeted with horror and incredulity by scientists, fertility doctors and ethicists.

26-year-old man with body of a two-year-old

Surgeons have been astonished by the medical rarity of a 26-year-old man trapped in the body of a two-year-old toddler.

Jerly Lyngdoh - who lives with his farmer parents in Meghalaya, northern India - looks like any other tot with his tiny head and delicate 2ft 9ins long body.

But it's only when he opens his mouth to reveal a full set of adult teeth that the truth about the world's oldest baby is revealed.

Experts believe glands which secrete growth hormones may be damaged in the 22 lbs medical miracle.

'Jerly's infantile features are remarkable, and the only thing he shares with an adult are his teeth,' said paediatrician Dr J. Ryndong.

'We think this is a case of pan-hypo pituitarism leading to poor secretion of growth hormones from the pituitary gland. He is a genuine rarity,' he added.

Jerly - who is still dressed in baby clothes by his parents - measures up at just four inches taller than China's He Pingping, officially the world's smallest man.

Control Your Lawnmower with a Wii Remote

While we all know how annoying and cumbersome it is to get up and start mowing the lawn, it may come as a surprise that one can now actually enjoy doing the world’s most boring job. Employees of a university in Denmark have created the Casmobot, the Wiimote controlled lawnmower. The Casmobot is equipped with receivers to be able to follow commands from a Wiimote.

If you are a little more than just surprised, you must just try to get this cool device, which looks almost like a futuristic machine but is only controlled by one of the most common remote control devices available today. The motion detectors
present in the Wiimote do all the magic and you can play games and clear shoddy grass simultaneously.

This way, you will never have to bother about angry and annoyed looks thrown back at you be neighbors who just cannot stand overgrown grass within your territory. The only problem I see however is the difficulty of being able to concentrate on the game while there is a possibility of the lawnmower mowing something that shouldn’t be!

Wii and its accessories have encouraged and inspired many budding scientists and inventors. The Wii DIY Projects may bring out the inventor in you as well! If you want to check out other lawnmowers and if you are not a great fan of either Wii or gaming, you could check out the other Remote Control Lawnmower we had featured earlier.

UFO in Holland, September, 2007

Published by the UFO Casebook: 11:27 AM 4/12/2009

The photographer/eyewitness to the event states:

I was fishing with my wife, when I noticed something in the sky. I could not see what it was, because off in the distance we saw it as a black spot.

Altitude was about 300 meters. I took my camera, Nikon D50 and had a 300 mm lens on it. I just shot some pics (about 12), ao I could see it on the computer.

It stayed for about half an hour, and then it disappeared (we didn't see it flying away). Photograph was taken in Holland, near Petten, on September 8, 2007.

Japan Close to Making Dream Reading Machines

credit foto bbc
A Japanese company has invented a product which, it says, allows owners to create their own dreams.

Prospective dreamers are asked to look at a photo of what they would like to dream about and then record a story line into the Yumemi Kobo, or "dream workshop".

The machine uses the voice recording, along with lights, music and smells, to help them direct their own dreams during periods of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, Takara Co said.

Sleepers are woken up gently after eight hours with music and lights that simulate sunlight so that users of the gadget do not forget their dream in the shock of waking.

Takara Co, which brought the world the "bowlingual" and "meowlingual" devices - which purport to translate your pet's communication - admitted the machine may still need refining.

"We are still experimenting, mainly with company employees," Kenji Hattori, a Takara marketing executive, told reporters on Wednesday.

"Some said the theme was right, but the story-line was wrong. Some said the noise woke them up. But it has worked for quite a number of people

Woman glues eye shut for eight hours after mistaking nail fixer for eyedrops

Groping in the bathroom cabinet early one morning, her vision blurred by sleep, Paula Griffin grasped what she thought was her bottle of eye drops.

But instead she picked up an almost identical bottle of powerful nail glue and squirted it in her eye.

The blunder left her in agony and sealed her right eye shut. Relief only came eight hours later when doctors cut off her lashes and prised the eye open.

The glue could have caused permanent damage to Miss Griffin's sight. It is used by beauty professionals to fix false nails and carries a warning that it bonds skin within seconds.

'I was still really tired and I couldn't see very well, so I stumbled into the bathroom and picked the bottle off the shelf,' she said. 'As soon as I squeezed it, I knew something was wrong. It was really thick and gloopy - not like eye drops at all.

'I couldn't dodge the liquid completely. I managed to stop it hitting the centre of the eye, and doctors told me later that it saved me from permanent damage.

'It was agonising. It was burning so much it was my natural instinct to shut my eye. But as soon as I did, my eyelashes stuck fast. I was terrified I'd done permanent damage.'

Miss Griffin, a company secretary, was taken to Poole Hospital in Dorset by her father Ron, 55. Doctors gave her paraffin to help dissolve the glue.

But by the afternoon she was still in great pain and the paraffin had made no progress so she went to an eye specialist at Bournemouth Hospital.

'They told me I had three options left,' she said. 'I could leave it glued shut until it unglued itself naturally but that would almost certainly cause more damage. I could keep trying to treat it with the paraffin, or I could have all my eyelashes cut off to force the eye open.

'By then, I was so miserable it wasn't even a decision. I had them cut straight off.

'It was horrible to have no eyelashes, but I don't regret doing it.'

Miss Griffin, from Bournemouth, had to take a week off work and couldn't drive for a few days. She had a cut across her eyeball and now wears false eyelashes. She is still waiting to find out whether she has done any lasting damage.

Dr Simon Bell, consultant in emergency medicine at Poole Hospital, said: 'As long as the glue remains on the outside of the eye, the injury will be extremely painful but will only cause superficial damage.

'If it had gone into the middle of the eyeball, it is much more likely permanent damage would have been caused.'

Russian scientists use Google maps to find yeti

The authorities of the Russian town of Kemerovo arranged a special expedition to find the yeti habitat which was discovered by Google maps.

Recently there have been more than 20 claims from the local hunters who said they had seen strange creatures in the forests. These creatures resembled yeti. After the claims from the local hunters Kemerovo authorities decided to create the team of scientists for yeti searches.

The expedition turned to be successful. Scientists managed to find ‘fresh’ yeti footprints in the Azassky cave.

Scientists found two identical yeti footprints. One of them was left on the rock and it dates back 5,000 years ago, and the other footprint which was left not long ago was found at the bottom of the cave.

“They are absolutely identical. Five thousand years ago yetis settled down in this cave and now their descendants are still living here. The conditions in the cave are suitable for yeti. The cave defends them from rains, snow and wind. There is also a lake in the middle of the cave where yetis can find clean water,” say the scientists.

Unfortunately, the scientists did not manage to see yetis that time. They say their snowmobiles were too noisy and yetis had to hide somewhere in the forests. However, the scientists say they managed to reach their main goal – they got the proof that yetis are living there. A new expedition to the site will be arranged this summer.

Click here to find photos from the expedition.

Pravda.Ru previously published the story about yeti from Russia's Vyatka

Moscow explorers discovered a wigwam of a creature unknown to science in the snow-covered forest.

Members of the Kosmopoisk association have returned from an expedition to Russia's Kirov Region where they searched for a bigfoot that allegedly lived in that region. Kosmopoisk leader Vadim Chernobrov says the expedition has discovered a den occupied by a mysterious giant and an underground passage dug obviously not by a human.

Ivan Konovalov has been working as a forest warden for 30 years in the Kirov Region. At first, the man did not plan to stay in that region for long, however he had an important meeting in November 1985 and changed his mind. Ivan Konovalov tells about that meeting: "It was snowing on the day when I was walking along the fir wood and suddenly heard snap of twigs. I turned around and saw an awesome creature covered with dark hair that was much taller than me. It smelt strongly. The beast leant against a pine tree and started bending it down to the ground.
